HMRC launches ‘Tax avoidance – don’t get caught out’ campaign

HMRC has created a series of messages, information and other communications materials as part of its ‘Tax Avoidance – don’t get caught out’ campaign, designed to help contractors get their tax right.

The Revenue’s campaign is designed to help contractors and their agents recognise the signs of tax avoidance and understand how umbrella companies work.

It has been developed partly in response to the loan charge, which saw tens of thousands of contractors and self-employed workers enter into non-compliant disguised remuneration schemes, often unknowingly.

As a result, many have faced retrospective tax bills, which have run into tens, even hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Commenting on the campaign, HMRC said: “We want them to check their pay and contract arrangements and get help if they think they’re in a tax avoidance scheme.

“We have provided these communications resources for stakeholders and partners to use across your own channels to communicate with contractors and workers about the campaign.”

The resources include:

  • Key messages
  • A sample blog post
  • Social media messages and imagery
  • Links to some personal stories from contractors who was caught up in tax avoidance schemes
